Sometimes, the most impactful work on screen is the work the audience never notices. That was very much the case on this advertising campaign for People's Energy, where my job was to make the impossible look completely effortless.
As VFX and Technical Supervisor on the project, I was responsible for overseeing the visual effects pipeline from shoot through to final delivery, making sure the creative vision held together at every stage. The real craft challenge, though, was in the 3D compositing. The majority of the lights you see throughout the ad weren't there on the day of the shoot. They were designed, built, and placed in post-production, integrated into the live-action footage so seamlessly that they feel like they were always part of the scene.
That kind of work requires a close understanding of how light behaves in the real world, how it falls, how it reflects, how it interacts with the environment around it. Getting it wrong, even slightly, and the illusion falls apart. Getting it right means the viewer just watches the ad and feels something, without ever stopping to wonder how it was made.
It's one of my favourite kinds of challenge, technical and creative in equal measure, and a good reminder that some of the best VFX work is the kind that's completely invisible.
